2005 Atlantic Coast Top Prospect Showcase
Morey is a 6-1, 175 lb junior right handed pitcher from Virginia with a live bodied athletic look to him. Morey is also a pretty good looking infield prospect who should be followed in that role as well. On the mound, Morey has a tall delivery and a hard front side that he has to use some effort at release to get over. He throws from a high 3/4's release point with a quick, compact arm stroke. Morey's fastball was 84-87 mph and fairly straight. He wraps his 71 mph curveball some in back but gets very tight, hard spin on the pitch and sharp downer biting action. He also threw a 76 mph change. Morey has touched 90 mph before in front of Perfect Game scouts and he has an electric arm. He can improve his stuff and command with some mechanical adjustments. As a position player, Morey is a 7.08 runner with fast twitch actions. He played primarily second base at the showcase and showed very good defensive actions at that position, with good footwork and balance. He should have the arm strength to play shortstop as well. Morey has an aggressive swing at the plate, with quick hands that he keeps tight to his body, much like when he's pitching. The ball jumps off his bat well and Morey hit well in the games as well as in batting practice. He's a very good 2-way follow with lots of ways that he can continue to improve. Morey is also a very good student.
