2006 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Benjamin Gatlin is a 2007 RHP/C/OF with a 6'2'', 175 lb. frame from Cataula GA, who attends Glenwood School. Gatlin has a good athletic frame with some looseness and projectable strength. He throws from a high leg kick delivery with a long, loose and lively arm action. He has some wrap in back on both his fastball and curveball. The ball comes out of his hand very easily and Gatlin doesn't throw with a lot of effort. His best pitch this day was a very tight and deep 74 mph curveball that is a potential plus pitch. Gatlin could have used his curveball more, especially since he had better command of it than he did his fastball. Gatlin's fastball was 86-89 mph. He struggled big time getting his fastball down in the zone and was unable to make adjustmetns. We've seen Gatlin before throw a complete game with no command problems, topping out at 90-91, so it's hard to say exactly what the problem was this day. He has the type of arm that it's easy to imagine him with a solid big league fastball and plus curveball in a few years. Gatlin has a big time arm and we think he just got caught up in the showcase environment and had a bad day.
