2017 Midwest Underclass Showcase
Richard Atkins is a 2019 LHP/ with a 6-0 170 lb. frame from Marion, IA who attends Marion. Medium frame with a lean build and wiry strength. Primary left handed pitcher with a smooth paced side step delivery. Stays balanced at gather and works to the plate with drop and drive actions. Lands in line with the plate and carries momentum to target. Clean arm circle at take back and released from a loose three-quarters slot. Fastball jumped out of hand well producing downhill plane with run to arm side in the low to mid 80's, topped at 84 miles per hour. Curveball showed 1/7 shape with tight spin and solid depth in the low 70's. Showed good feel for both fastball and curveball consistently locating to each edge of the plate. Showed good poise while on the mound with a good knowledge for pitching. Also worked out defensively from first base showing clean, sound footwork while surrounding the baseball. Funnels the baseball out front and worked through exchange efficiently. Moves well while working off of the bag. Released from a three-quarters slot producing accurate carry to the bag, topped at 77 miles per hour. Left handed hitter with an upright, slightly open stance and simple leg lift trigger. Created some linear shift into contact with lower half. Loose hand path to baseball with a line drive plane through extension. Throws bat head to contact well and flashed feel for the barrel. Primarily worked to the middle of the field but flashed the ability to work to all fields as well. Very good student. Named to the 2017 Midwest Underclass Showcase, Top Prospect List.
