Eric Wakeman is a 2007 SS/P with a 6'1'', 180 lb. frame from Aurora ON, who attends Cardinal Carter HS. He has a solid athletic build with good proportions and present strength. Wakeman is a primary shortstop but he didn't take infield drills and pitched, so we didn't get a good feel for his defense. He did have good speed and quickness in his actions and nice athletic balance. With the bat, Wakeman hit out of a spread stance with an exaggerated pre-load approach. He had little rhythm to start the bat and committed early to pitches and was often way out front and around the ball. When he stayed back, Wakeman showed some bat speed and strength in his swing. He lifted a few balls well and showed gap to gap power. Wakeman has good hitting tools but his approach needs adjustments in order to take advantage of them. On the mound, Wakeman has an athletic, easy delivery with a compact, tension free arm action. He has a high leg kick and does a good job hiding the ball from the hitters. His fastball was 80-82 mph with some run. Wakeman threw both a curveball and a slider, with the curveball having a sharper break to it. He also mixed in a couple of 70 mph changes that showed very good deception and movement. Wakeman mixes up his pitches, throws strikes and was very effective during his outing. Overall, Wakeman is a talented athlete and has a very good balance of baseball skills/tools. He should keep improving, especially with the bat.
