2005 National Underclass Dec 28-30
Robert Layne is a 2007 OF/P from Larry Ryle HS in Union, KY, with a 6'1'', 165 lb. frame. He has a projectable body that is beginning to add strength. Layne ran the 60 in 7.44 and threw 76 mph from the outfield. He throws from a low 3/4's arm slot from the outfield with a slinging arm action, which doesn't maximize his natural arm strength. Layne hits from a crouched stance with an upper body rotational swing. Layne's strength gives him some raw bat speed at the plate but he doesn't get much use of his lower half. He likes the ball on the inside half of the plate where he can turn on the ball. He tends to pull off and reach on pitches on the outside part of the plate. Layne has the athletic potential to be a good hitter but is not helping himself with his hitting fundamentals at present. Layne also pitched some. He has a very deceptive pitching style with the same low 3/4's release point and slinging arm action that he showed from the outfield. Layne's fastball topped out at 73 mph but he had lots of sinking action on his fastball and did a good job throwing strikes and keeping the ball low in the strike zone. Layne is a good student.
