Joseph Koerper is a 2009 3B/P with a 6'5'', 210 lb. frame from Las Cruces, NM who attends Onate HS. He has a strong and athletic body type that is very well-proportioned. Koerper passes the eye test with flying colors and has a chance to develop into physical hitter. He has an easy, low effort swing, with good timing and a nice opposite field approach. Koerper's strong hands work well and he controls his swing. Expect his power to come on as he learns to drive through contact. When that does happen, his power could come on really fast. Defensively Koerper showed a solid arm and hands that can play at 3rd base, though he plays a bit high and that will limit the number of plays he can make as the game speeds up at higher levels. A move to 1st base or left field may be in his future. On the mound Koerper also showed promise. He has a long and easy arm action that works from a high 3/4 slot. His mechanics are good as is his tempo. He spotted his 80-82 mph fastball well on both sides of the plate. Koerper spins the curveball (69 mph) well and it has some depth. His best pitch is a changeup (73 mph) that he throws with plus hand speed. It is a swing and miss changeup, with depth and late life. Koerper pitches with a plan and executed pitches. He is an excellent student.
