Andrew Payton is a 2022 C/RHP, SS with a 5-6 125 lb. frame from Martinsville, IN who attends Martinsville. Medium, athletic frame with square shoulders and a young, projectable build with room to fill and grow throughout moving forward. Ran a 7.67 60-yard dash. Primary catcher, athletic set behind the plate, comes out of crouch well and gains ground with lower half, quickness to feet and gets the ball out of the glove well, shows a nice feel for overall mechanics, arm strength will continue to develop. Fields the ball out front in the infield, works through the ball with an extra step into release, glove plays at the ball, can drop slot on throws. Also pitched, high leg lift up past belt, stays compact through the back with arm action and works to a three-quarters release point. Fastball topped out at 73 mph, short running life to arm side and shows plane with extension out front. Nice feel for changeup and can continue to incorporate it more, nice fading life to changeup at 66 mph. Righthanded hitter, begins with an open stance and lower hand set with a high back elbow. Utilizes a leg lift trigger for timing at the plate and gets closed moving into contact. Simple swing and shows a linear path through the zone. Gets mistimed occasionally with weight shift, creates bat speed through the zone and projects with added strength, comfort working to the pull side. Excellent student.
