2005 National Underclass Dec 28-30
Eric Curtis is a 2007 C/OF/P from Mataoca HS in Chester, VA, with a 6'1'', 193 lb. frame. He has very good present strength throughout his body. Curtis is an above average athlete who combines his strength with very good speed and balanced athletic actions. He ran the 60 in 7.15. He stood out defensively both behind the plate and in the outfield. As a catcher, Curtis has very good arm strength and had a best pop time of 2.09. He has a hitch at the top of his release that slows his times down but his throws are low and accurate. He moves very well behind the plate and has quick actions and feet. As an outfielder, Curtis moves very smoothly and aggressively to the ball and shows very good arm strength with accuracy and on-line carry. He has college level tools defensively at both positions and with his arm strength and agility could probably play some infield positions as well. Offensively, Curtis hits out of a wide stance with a flat bat and very little weight shift or lower body movement in his swing. He starts his swing with a backward lean and has a long, upper cut swing. Curtis shows some raw bat speed due to his overall strength but his hitting fundamentals are keeping him from using his significant athletic ability to hit with any consistency. He could really improve with some adjustments. Proving his versatility, Curtis also pitched and threw 81 mph from the mound with a 69 mph curveball and a pretty good dancing 68 mph knuckleball. Curtis is a good follow and an above average athlete with the chance to really come on in the future. Good follow. He is also a good student.
