2006 National Showcase
Cameron Gray is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Silverthorn Collegiate, residing in Toronto, ON. He has an average athletic body type and a 6'0" 180 lb. frame. Gray earned his #59 ranking among PG National Top 85 pitchers not simply by possessing power stuff, but by having quality stuff and the ability to pitch with hit. He pitches from a 3/4 slot with a long and easy arm stroke. He has a fluid delivery with rhythm and good arm speed, making his stuff a bit sneaky. With his loose body type, he has a chance to continue to throw harder and harder as he gains strength in the coming years because there is so little effort in his arm stroke and delivery. Gray can flat out pitch. He effectively used his 85-88 mph fastball in a couple different ways. He showed the ability to sink it as well as being able to ride it up and in on right hand hitters. Few hitters got good swings at him because of the sneakiness and movement of his fastball. Gray also has a 78-80 mph slider with good depth and nice two plane shape. The action was pretty late and quite slippery. It is the kind of slider that gets hitters to swing late and weakly but the ball in play. Not a put-away slider, but one that can get outs and create soft contact. Hitters look like they feel they can get to the slider but it has enough depth and late wrinkle to miss the meat of the bat. With his fastball moving one way and the slider moving the other way, Gray has stuff that moves to both sides of the plate and nothing that is in the middle. He has more fastball in there, which also bodes well for his slider. He has the ability to keep hitters off balance and to upset their timing and afterall, that is what pitching is all about. Gray is a D1 college prospect and in time, should develop into a quality professional prospect too.
