2007 Pitcher/Catcher Indoor Showcase
Zach Smith is a 2008 RHP/1B with a 6'4'', 205 lb. frame from St Peters MO, who attends Ft. Zumwalt South HS. He has a tall, angular build and good strength potential. Smith as an easy delivery with a good downhill angle to the plate and nice extension out front. He has a full arm circle in back and repeats his delivery very well. Smith's delivery needs few tweaks and if anything is so smooth that he doesn't have much deception to the hitter. Smith threw two types of fastball, a 4-seamer at 83-84 mph and what looked like a 2-seamer or hard change up that he turned over at 78 mph and had good boring action down in the zone. Smith's curveball had nice spin and sharpness and a good 11/5 break to it and was a quality pitch for him. Smith had predictably good command of his pitches and had nice pace to his approach to the hitters. He has a nice ceiling as a pitcher and should be followed closely. Smith also showed some hitting tools. He has solid bat speed with very good extension and some power potential. His hitting approach mirrors his pitching mechanics in many ways. Smith is a very good student off the field.
