2023 Northeast Top Prospect Games @ Rutgers (Wed-Thur)
JJ Watkins is a 2027 OF/RHP with a 6-1 170 lb. frame from Mays Landing, NJ who attends Cedar Creek. Lean, high waisted frame with long levers and plenty of room to physically mature. Recorded a 6.88 second sixty-yard dash time. Primary outfielder with anticipatory actions into the fielding process. Fields properly off his front foot, gathers cleanly and transitions athletically into release with maintained momentum. Produced fairly accurate throws up to 84 mph during drills. Secondary right-hander that worked exclusively from the stretch in this look. Simple, repeatable operation with elongated leg lift into balance and longer arm circle on the backside of the arm stroke. Fastball worked in the low-to-mid 70s for the majority of his outing from a loose three-quarters arm slot and topped out at 77 mph in this look. Landed slurve shaped breaker as go-to secondary offering, as it showed best when it featured lateral sweep and was thrown with conviction. Will continue to improve on the mound with mechanical refinements and additional velocity. Right-handed hitter that hits from wider base with lower hand set and toe-tap trigger. Simple stroke with quickness to his hands and line drive tendencies. Middle-of-the field approach with budding gap-to-gap power, swing translates well into game action. Immensely projectable prospect with upside on both sides of the baseball, will continue to improve with mechanical refinements and additional strength. Named to the 2023 Northeast Top Prospect Games Top Prospect List.
