2006 National Showcase
Nick Chmielewski is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Carl Sandburg HS, residing in Orland Park, IL. He has a strong, compact, somewhat stocky build on a 6'1" 190 lb. frame. He looks to be a durable, innings eater with a good arm. Chmielewski was ranked #41 among PG National Top 100 pitchers. He pitches from an over the top slot and has a quick arm, with a two part action on the backside. Chmielewski has a high energy delivery with a little cross body stride. His fastball topped at 93 and he ranged 86-92 mph. His fastball can ride and he likes that pitch, throwing it aggressively. There was some cutting action at the lower velocities, whether that was intentional or not. Chmielewski used both a 67-71 mph curveball and a 74-75 mph slider. Both pitches had good spin and if he can hold them a bit longer they would have more bite and action. His feel of both pitches was average, which seems about right when considsering how aggressively he throws his fastball. Chmielewski also showed a 71 mph change-up. It would seem that he is a good closer type, though that can clearly be tough to project in a high school pitcher. Chmielewski will need to continue to work on his secondary offerings. He is a D1 prospect and will get more than a passing glance from the area scouts this spring. Young right handers who can touch 93 do not grow on trees.
