2006 Academic Showcase
Zachary Dean is a 2008 OF/1B/P with a 5'8'', 160 lb. frame from Montgomery, AL, who attends The First Academy. He's short but has an athletic, strong build. Dean ran the 60 in 7.31 and threw 73 mph from the outfield during drills. He has a quick first step in the outfield and gets to balls well but has a recoil/slinging arm action that limits his arm strength. Offensively, Dean has a quiet approach and good balance at the plate. He waits back on pitches well and attacks aggressively when he gets the bat going. Dean's hands are strong and quick and he stays inside the ball well. Most of his contact is to left field but it is hard line drive contact, not slap contact. He has the strength and bat speed to develop some power as he learns what pitches he can turn on. Dean also pitched a bit and showed a much smoother arm action on the mound than he did in the outfield. He's a savvy pitcher who hides the ball well, changes speeds and commands his pitches. His fastball was 76 mph with plus sinking life on occasion and his change up and curveball had some quality as well. He probably has some success at the high school level. Dean is an outstanding student off the field.
