2004 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Chris Chapman is a 2005 left handed pitcher from Chesapeake, Virginia. Chris has fast twitch muscle tone in a 5'9", 162 lb. athletic body, and the physical look of a young Mike Hampton. On the mound Chris has a very quick arm with an extended 3/4 arm slot. He has good balance in his delivery with late show of the ball to the batter. Chris showed an 83-85 mph fastball, 71-74 mph curveball, 76-77 change up, and a 76 mph slider. His curveball has plus/plus potential with hard, tight spinning downward action. He shows very good life on all of his pitches with very good sinking action on his fastball. Chapman works both sides of the plate with good command. He will try to overthrow at times, and his command does suffer when he does. Look for his velocity to continue to increase as he continues to mature. At the plate Chris is a left handed hitter with quick actions. He uses an open to closed approach, and closes off well while showing very good bat speed and good balance in his swing. He has strong hands and has the potential to hit for power down the line. In the OF Chris showed solid arm strength with consistent 85 mph velocity, and very good long carry on throws. He's an exciting player to watch with big time potential at the plate, in the outfield, and on the mound. Chapman is a two way player for many programs. His size might keep pro scouts a little cool to him, but top level colleges should see him.
