James Coats is a 2023 RHP/1B, 3B with a 6-1 160 lb. frame from Carle Place, NY who attends Kellenberg Memorial. Large, narrow shouldered frame with long limbs and a lean, projectable build with room to fill throughout. Ran a 7.76 60-yard dash. Primary righthanded pitcher, big rock step moving into a belt high leg lift with slight turn; works to a three-quarters release point and consistently filled the strike zone. Worked arm side well with fastball, topped out at 74 mph, creates running life to the pitch and maintained velocity throughout. Confidence in fastball-curveball combo, breaking ball shows 11-5 shape with short depth up to 63 mph. Projects with added strength. Fields the ball out front in the infield, lower slot on throws across the diamond, accurate with slight uphill at release, will continue to refine actions. Righthanded hitter, begins with a spread stance with a high hand set and lower back elbow; utilizes a leg lift trigger for timing. Upper body dominant swing, keeps weight on backside, works to the middle of the field with comfort, mostly linear through the zone, shows ability to repeat, bat speed will continue to develop. Excellent student.
