2003 Northeast Top Prospect Showcase
McConnell is an "04" SS with outstanding defensive skills. At 5'11/150 he looks bigger than that and he has lots of room to add strength. He has a MLB close to average arm and excellent actions. His body control and rhythm are outstanding. He has great hands and feet. He looks more like the many outstanding Latin shortstops we see than a kid from New Jersey. He is an exciting smooth defensive player. He runs the bases very well, but lacks MLB average shortstop speed. Could move to 2B in pro ball, where he would be gold glove caliber. At the plate he shows nice loose hands and a good line drive swing. We had heard that hitting was his weakness. We can say that is definitely not the case. He will hit .300 or better with nothing more than hand eye coordination. Down the road he will gain more strength and be very good with the wood bat. This kid is an exceptional player and if he were stronger and faster he would go very early in next June's draft. Look for him to get lots of scouting interest and he might be worth a fortune coming out of college. Chris is that good.
