Matthew Hamann is a 2007 RHP/OF with a 6'2'', 185 lb. frame from Northbrook IL, who attends Glenbrook North HS. He has an athletic frame with very good present strength and looks heavier and stronger than his listed 185 lbs. Hamann throws from a 3/4's release point with a bit of cross body action on release. He maintains a good downhill angle to the plate and his arm action is short and compact. Hamann's fastball was up to 83 mph with some running action. His curveball had good spin and downer bite at times but his release point was inconsistent on both this pitch and on his change up. We actually felt that Hamann had better tools as a position player/outfielder. He has athletic actions in the outfield and very good arm strength. His strength gives him good bat speed and when he got his hands extended through the ball he showed very, very good power to right center field. The ball jumps off his bat hard and he has quick, strong hands. Hamann is a good player both ways but he projects better as a right fielder right now because of that power potential. Hamann is also a good student.
