LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2004 National Underclass Dec 28-30
Matthews is a medium bodied 5-11 junior right handed pitcher from the unusual baseball state of Vermont. He threw 4 innings in Fort Myers, with a short arm stroke in back and a slinging mid ¾’s release point out front. Matthews release point and arm action gave his 73-76 mph fastball some good arm side running action at times. Matthews breaking ball was a big breaking 59-63 mph curveball and he had some nice sinking action on a 65-67 mph change up. One piece of showcase advice from the PG staff for Matthews; you shouldn’t throw to first base so much, it’s good to see the runners run and the catchers throw and we really don’t keep score. For a Northeast player at this time of year, Matthews took a nice batting practice, too. He’s a switch hitter with good hitting fundamentals and a nice level swing from both sides. We imagine that he’s a pretty good high school hitter up in Vermont in the late spring. Matthews is a good student.
